She didn't flinch away from his touch this time, still very tense, saying nothing. She didn't ask who, didn't ask how. She wasn't certain she wanted to know.

She stood in silence for several long moments, then lowered herself slowly to the floor, sinking into a tight crouch and then falling back against the wall heavily, swallowing. "I... I can't..."

She shook visibly, her entire body quaking with suppressed emotion manifesting itself as nearly uncontrollable rage. She backed away another pace to keep from lashing out at him. "Why? Find another story. There are thousands."

He didn't struggle. Her voice stabbed his ears, grating and grinding. His own smooth baritone spoke his words quietly. "You can endure. You have endured, and you will endure. The way you speak of those who have done you wrong betrays your strength. You can overcome these troubles and become more than you've ever dreamed."
He shrugged. "Careers come and go. Night is the stuff of legend."
